For most situations, common sense will tell you what to avoid. Hard foods, sticky foods and foods high in sugar must be avoided. Hard foods can break or damage wires and brackets. Sticky foods can get caught between brackets and wires. Minimize sugary foods; they cause tooth decay and related problems. Nail biting, pencil and pen chewing and chewing on foreign objects should be avoided.
Examples of Sticky Foods to Avoid:
- Gum (sugar-free or regular)
- Licorice
- Sugar Daddies
- Toffee
- Tootsie Rolls
- Caramels

Growing Up Cavity Free

February is National Children's Dental Health Month. In many countries, tooth decay (and gum disease) is the second most common disease, with only the cold more common. Studies have linked poor oral health in children to poor performance in school, poor social relationships and less success in later life. But whether you're six or sixty, with today's technology and advances in dental medicine, it's easier than ever before to prevent cavities and gum disease.
To help your kids grow up cavity free, here are a few tips...
- Don't make the mistake of thinking baby teeth don't need as much care as permanent ones. Even though they're eventually lost, they do an important job of holding a place in

Some orthodontic problems may be easier to correct if treated early. Waiting until all the permanent teeth have come in, or until facial growth is nearly complete, may make correction of some problems more difficult. But…children and adults can both benefit from orthodontics, because healthy teeth can be moved at almost any age. It is not unusual to begin orthodontic intervention if one or more of the following early warning signs is seen:
- Difficulty in chewing or biting
- Chronic mouth breathing
- Finger sucking or other oral habits that continue after 6 years of age
- Top front teeth that protrude
- Top front teeth cover more than 25% of the bottom teeth when biting

Once active treatment is complete and braces are removed, patients often think that is the end of their orthodontic treatment. However, there is one final treatment stage utilized in orthodontics to ensure the longevity of your new smile.
Retention is the passive treatment period following active orthodontic correction where retaining appliances are used to hold teeth in the corrected position.
This retention process takes time, often ranging from months to years, which makes patient compliance so important. In fact, the retention phase is sometimes deemed as one of the most difficult stages in the orthodontic treatment process. If retainers aren't worn as instructed by an orthodontist, then teeth may start to migrate back to their original positions. It

The technical term for orthodontic dental and facial irregularities is malocclusion, which literally means 'bad bite.' Malocclusion involves the misalignment of the teeth and jaws and/or an incorrect relationship between the upper and lower dental arches. Malocclusion can be dental, where the teeth aren't lined up properly, and skeletal, which occurs when the upper and lower jaws don't line up correctly.
The way the teeth fit together is extremely important in how well teeth work and can affect appearance and self-esteem, and the health of the teeth, digestion, and overall health. Because of the pressure the jaws can put on the teeth, misaligned teeth can also cause chronic pain and soreness. The most common causes of malocclusion are too much or not enough room in the jaw (or jaws) for the teet
